Introducing Stepwise
· Projects
I like learning with Duolingo. A lot. Small lessons. A streak to protect. A little push every day.
I wanted the same thing for learning AI. Not just how to use it. How it actually works. The maths underneath. Vectors, gradients, probability, all the things I nodded along to and never really understood.
Most courses are long videos. Easy to start. Hard to finish.
So I built my own. Stepwise is a small learning app in the browser. Each lesson takes about two minutes. It teaches one idea, then asks a few questions about it. If you get one wrong, it comes back at the end until you get it right. Old questions come back days later, so you don't forget them.
There are four learning paths for now:
- AI & Machine Learning: from zero to how LLMs work. Vectors, matrices, derivatives, probability, neural networks, embeddings, attention, transformers. Thirteen units, about a hundred tiny lessons.
- Python Basics: for people who have never written code. The Python runs right in the browser.
- Coding Interview Prep: the usual patterns, with real exercises.
- Computers & AI for Kids: how computers work, how AI learns, and how chatbots think. Made for my niece and nephew.
The AI path has three characters. Bolt is a robot who is learning everything for the first time. He is very confident and often wrong. He hates broccoli. Mochi is a cat who knocks things off tables and is always right. Priya runs a bakery and keeps asking Bolt to predict how many croissants she will sell.
A joke about broccoli in a lesson about cross-entropy sounds silly. But the silly bits are the ones that stick.
Several people can use it on the same computer. Everyone gets their own profile, their own streak, their own progress. So the kids won't break my streak.
No login. No tracking. No ads. Your progress stays in your own browser.
It will not make you an AI researcher. But maybe one day "attention is a weighted average" will finally make sense.
