A Reacher Book Worth Reading Before the Next Season Hits
I picked up Gone Tomorrow for a very specific reason. Word got out that the next Jack Reacher season on Amazon is going to be based on this book, so I had to read it before the show aired. No spoilers from a screen adaptation for me, thank you.
If you've read any Reacher before, you know what you're getting into. A big guy who keeps walking into trouble, sorts it all out, and moves on. Gone Tomorrow is exactly that. The jokes land, the story moves fast, and Reacher once again seems to think ten steps ahead of everyone around him.
That said, this one felt a little different to me. Reacher actually gets fooled here, not just for a moment but for a good stretch of the book. He gets played, and he doesn't see it coming right away. What still makes it feel like a Reacher book is how he pieces it all together later through pure logic. It's a small thing, but it actually made the story more interesting to read.
What I'm honestly curious about is how the show is going to handle some of the topics in this book. It doesn't stay away from heavy stuff, the Twin Towers, Osama bin Laden, Afghanistan, Ronald Reagan, a CIA cover up, a stolen sniper rifle, all of it is very much part of the plot. These aren't just mentioned in passing, they drive the whole story. Fitting all of that into a TV show, for today's audience, is going to be quite a task. I'm almost more curious about that than the story itself.
Overall, a good Reacher book, and honestly more interesting because it's not all smooth sailing for him this time. Read it before the season drops, you'll watch it differently.
